Dog saved from a fire in Sète: “It happened very quickly and we were lucky”, the police officer recounts his heroic act

The day after his intervention, Olivier, municipal police officer, details the intervention which made it possible to remove a dog from a burning apartment.

The video of his intervention to save a dog stuck in a burning apartment of rue Frédéric Mistral, this Monday, was seen by more than 50,000 people on Midilibre.fr. Enough to bring sudden notoriety to Olivier, municipal police officer of Sète for ten years. And little despite himself…

“There was only smoke”

“The recognition is nice, that’s for sure. But at the time we didn’t really have time to think about it. Just to assess the situation and our chances of success.” Arriving first at the scene of the fire after a radio call, Olivier and his teammates will quickly enter the building to carry out reconnaissance.

“We were lucky to come across workers who provided us with a sledgehammer to blow down the front door. The procedure is to go up to the top floor and come back down, checking that there is nothing person.”

The building is fortunately unoccupied, but the smoke prevents them from entering the apartment where the fire broke out. This is when someone close to the owner alerts them to the presence of a dog. “At this stage there was only smoke. We used a ladder and I climbed through the window. Everything happened very quickly. It’s rewarding to be able to help people, it’s especially that’s why we do this job.”
