During his first match on the Olympique Lyonnais bench, Fabio Grosso did not hesitate to make big changes and the most important one was undoubtedly the absence of Rayan Cherki.
Indisputable starter under the orders of Laurent Blanc, Rayan Cherki does not seem to have the same confidence granted by his new coach. During the 1-0 defeat against Stade Brestois, Fabio Grosso managed his first match with theOL. A dull and very poor match offensively, where Rayan Cherki was left on the bench, in favor of Diego Moreira. However, the Portuguese was until then very inexperienced with only 14 minutes in Ligue 1, before the match at Francis Le Blé. The Italian technician was recruited to instill a new dynamic, even if it meant making sometimes controversial choices. Because if Cherki is presented as one of the greatest hopes of the Lyon training center, he is still struggling to really explode. Fabio Grosso does not really appreciate his profile, assures RMC, for whom the Italian coach did not put the international hopeful on the bench by chance during his first match.
Cherki, first victim of the Grosso era?
Rayan Cherki could thus pay the price for the arrival of the former Lyon player, returning to his club. Grosso did without the services of the attacking midfielder and explained why. “I have confidence in him, but I preferred to put other players in” declared the Italian at a press conference. Dubbed by the Rhone supporters for having stayed during the storm, despite offers from big European clubs, Cherki will perhaps ironically live a season on the bench. A status that will probably not please the 20-year-old player at all. In 108 matches played with Les Gones, he only scored 14 goals and provided 13 assists. Presumably, this is too insufficient for the Italian, who also makes it a question of playing principles. Against Reims, Lyon will have the obligation to beat Will Still’s formation, in order to get out of the red zone. It is likely that Grosso will once again do without Rayan Cherki.
