Lappartient wants to support cyclo-cross

While some cyclo-cross headliners are increasingly ignoring the World Cup rounds, David Lappartient said he was considering depriving these riders of participation in the Worlds if this were to continue.

David Lappartient does not intend to remain without reacting. The president of the International Cyclist Union (UCI) witnesses a certain lack of interest among leading riders in the cyclo-cross World Cup, the season of which began on October 15 in the United States. United and which must end in Hoogerheide on January 28, one week before the 2024 edition of the world championships which will also take place in the Dutch city. While he admits to understanding the reluctance regarding moving to the other side of the Atlantic Ocean for a single round, David Lappartient calls for a revision of the calendar to make the Waterloo stage more attractive, just as for the one organized on the Italian snow.

“We must create a sequence, with Canada,” assured the boss of world cycling in comments collected by the specialized site DirectVélo. With Val di Sole, you also have to see that there is another cross in the area. » But if there is a particular case that irritates David Lappartient, it is that of Thibau Nys. While the Belgian did not shine during the European Championships last weekend in Pontchâteau, he gave up the World Cup stage scheduled for this Sunday in Dendermonde.

Lappartient: “Every runner must play the game”

But he showed up at the start of the third round of the Superprestige, in Niel. “When you’re tired, you don’t ride. This is why I understand that there are rest periods in a season, initially confided the president of the UCI. I don’t want to stigmatize him because Thibau Nys is a runner that cross country needs. But he is not the only one who is leaving the World Cup aside. If it doesn’t work, there are definitely things to improve. » Faced with this situation, David Lappartient calls for a modification of the regulations aimed at changing the situation regarding the cyclo-cross world championships.

“If a rider prefers to ride a national event during World Cup rounds, you will not do the following World Cup rounds and therefore no world championship,” thundered the boss of world cycling. The World Cup is not a competition in which you draw as you wish. Every rider must play the game.” Added to this should be a deeper reform of the World Cup calendar to encourage riders to get involved.
